Choosing Hardware Wallets for Family Multisig

Not every hardware wallet supports every multisig configuration. Before purchasing devices for a family reserve, consider compatibility, firmware update practices, and the manufacturer’s track record for long-term support.

Multisig Compatibility

Bitcoin multisig through standards like BIP48 and output descriptors requires wallets that export xpubs in compatible formats. Ledger, Coldcard, and Keystone devices each handle descriptor export differently. Mixing models within one quorum is possible but adds documentation complexity.

We advise families to standardize on one or two models unless geographic availability forces variation.

Firmware Update Policy

The most common register amendment we perform follows uncoordinated firmware updates. Establish a family policy: no signer updates firmware without notifying others and scheduling a joint verification session within seven days.

Record the agreed policy in your register’s amendment log.

Vendor Longevity

A hardware wallet manufacturer that discontinues support leaves devices functional but increasingly difficult to verify. We note each device’s purchase date and the manufacturer’s stated support timeline in the register inventory section.

Families planning generational holds should favor manufacturers with five or more years of active firmware releases.
