Why a Written Device Register Outlasts Memory

When a family establishes a three-of-five multisig reserve, each signer memorizes their role. The eldest sibling knows the derivation path. A cousin in another city holds the backup device. Passphrase hints live in someone’s notes app.

This works until it does not.

The Failure Modes We See Repeatedly

Firmware drift. One signer updates their Ledger firmware without telling others. Derivation paths shift. A coordinated signature fails during an urgent withdrawal.

Custodian turnover. A signer moves abroad, loses their device, or passes away. Remaining signers cannot locate the recovery materials because no document described where they were stored.

Path confusion. Multiple accounts on the same device use different BIP standards. Family members sign from the wrong account index, sending funds to an address no other signer recognizes.

What a Register Records

A device register captures verifiable facts at a point in time: serial numbers, firmware versions, xpub fingerprints, geographic storage locations, and custodian assignments. It describes passphrase storage without reproducing secrets.

The register is updated through amendment sessions when devices change — not edited informally by individual signers.

The Quarterly Verification Habit

Families with registers conduct offline balance checks using recorded xpub fingerprints. This confirms the documented paths still match live holdings without exposing private keys. A fifteen-minute quarterly check prevents years of silent drift.
